Several monasteries which are lying in and near villages in Danube Plain, near the Roussenski Lom river and the Danube river, are located in Rousse region.

The Ivanovo rock monastery is the one preserved in the best condition. It is included in the UNESCO list of World Cultural Heritage due to its unique frescoes in the rock church “St. Virgin Mary”. The Basarbovo monastery “St.Dimitur Basarbovski” is 25km away from the Ivanovo monastery and it is the only one functional rock monastery in Bulgaria.

Basarbovo Monastery “St. Dimitrii of Basarbovo”

Basarbovo Rock Monastery was established during the period of the second Bulgarian kingdom, but its name was mentioned for the first time in a Turkish tax register in 1431. The most famous resident of the monastery was St. Dimitrii Basarbovski.
